Read online The Violence of the Green Revolution: Third World Agriculture, Ecology and Politics.pdf PDF, EPUB, MOBI, TXT, DOC The Violence of the Green Revolution: Third World Agriculture, Ecology and Politics As the agricultural systems of many countries are poised as a result of the recent advances in biotechnology for what may soon come to be called the Second Green Revolution this book is particularly appropriate Vandana Shiva examined the impact of the first Green Revolution on the breadbasket of India In a cogent empirical argument she shows how the quick fix promise of large gains in output pushed aside serious pursuit of an alternative agricultural strategy grounded in respect for the environmental wisdom of peasant systems and building an egalitarian needs prientated agriculture consistent with the village based endogenous political traditions of Gandhism Dr Shiva documents the destruction of genetic diversity and soil fertility that resulted and in highly original fashion shows how the Green Revolution also contributed to the acute social and political conflicts now tearing the Punjab apart .

Set in the context of a sophisticated critique of the privileged epistemological position achieved by modern science whereby it both aspires to provide technological solutions for social and political problems while at the same time disclaiming responsibility for the new problems which it creates in its wake the author looks to the future in an analysis of a new project to apply the latest Gene Revolution technology to India and warns of the further environmental and social damage which will ensue by Vandana Shiva

Vandana Shiva has established herself as a leading independent thinker and voice for the South in that critically important nexus where questions of development strategy the environment and the posititon of women in society coincide In this new volume she brings together her thinking on the protection of biodiversity the implications of biotechnology and the consequences for agriculture of the global pre eminence of Western style scientific knowledge br br In lucid and accessible fashion she examines the current threats to the planet s biodiversity and the environmental and human consequences of its erosion and replacement by monocultural production She shows how the new Biodiversity Convention has been gravely undermined by a mixture of diplomatic dilution during the process of negotiation and Northern hi tech interests making money out of the new biotechnologies She explains what these technologies involve and gives examples of their impact in practice She questions their claims to improving natural species for the good of all and highlights the ethical and environmental problems posed br br Underlying her arguments is the view that the North s particular approach to scientific understanding has led to a system of monoculture in agriculture a model that is not being foisted on the South displacing its societies ecologically sounder indigenous and age old experiences of truly sustainable food cultivation forest management and animal husbandry This rapidly accelerating process of technology and system transfer is impoverishing huge numbers of people disrupting the social systems that provide them with security and dignity and will ultimately result in a sterile planet in both North and South In a policy intervention of potentially great significance she calls instead for a halt at international as well as local level to the aid and market incentives to both large scale destruction of habitats where biodiversity thrives and the introduction of centralised homogenous systems of cultivation, br br A leading voice in the struggle for global justice Vandana Shiva is a world renowned environmental activist and physicist In Earth Democracy Shiva updates the struggles she helped bring to international attention against genetic food engineering culture theft and natural resource privatization uncovering their links to the rising tide of fundamentalism violence against women and planetary death br br br br Starting in the th century with the initial enclosure of the British commons Shiva reveals how the commons continue to shrink as more and more natural resources are patented and privatized As our ecological sustainability and cultural diversity erode so too is human life rendered disposable Through the forces of neoliberal globalization economic and social exclusion ignite violence across lines of difference threatening the lives of millions br br br br Yet these brutal extinctions are not the only trend shaping human history Struggles on the streets of Seattle and Cancun and in homes and farms across the world have yielded a set of principles based on inclusion nonviolence reclaiming the commons and freely sharing the earth s resources These ideals which Shiva calls Earth Democracy serves as an urgent call to peace and as the basis for a just and sustainable future br br, Vandana Shiva is one of the world s most prominent radical scientists In Staying Alive she defines the links between ecological crises colonialism and the oppression of women It is a scholarly and polemical plea for the rediscovery of the feminine principle in human interaction with the natural world not as a gender based quality rather an organizing principle a way of seeing the world the Guardian br br In this pioneering work Vandana Shiva looks at the history of development and progress stripping away the neutral language of science to reveal third world development policy as the global twin of the industrial revolution br br As Shiva makes clear the way this development paradigm is being implemented through violence against nature and women threatens survival itself She focuses on how rural Indian women experience and perceive the causes and effects of ecological destruction and how they conceive of and initiate processes to stop the destruction and begin regeneration As the world continues to follow destructive paths of development Shiva s Staying Alive is a fiercely relevant book that positions women not solely as survivors of the crisis but as the source of crucial insights and visions to guide our struggle br br Vandana Shiva is the author of many books including Staying Alive Earth Democracy and Soil Not Oil She is a leader in the International Forum on Globalization IFG and the Slow Food movement, Shiva is a burst of creative energy an intellectual power i The Progressive i br br i Manifestos on the Future of Food and Seed i is a short pocket sized collection that goes to the heart of our existence what we eat and how we grow it It covers the questions br br br How are seeds cultivated and saved How far must food travel before reaching our plate Who gets paid for the food we eat Why does our food taste like this We live in a world where of the eighty thousand edible plants used for food only about are being cultivated and just eight are traded globally A world where we produce food for billion people when there are only billion people living and still million suffer from malnutrition and billion suffer from obesity A world where food is modified to travel long distances rather than to be nutritious and flavorful br br i Manifestos on the Future of Food and Seed i lays out in practical steps and far reaching concepts a program to ensure food and agriculture become more socially and ecologically sustainable The book harvests the work and ideas produced by thousands of communities around the world Emerging from the historic gatherings at Terra Madre farmers traders and activists diagnose and offer prescriptions to reverse perhaps the worst food crisis faced in human history br br There is a growing realization that food politics is vital to the health of our bodies economies and environment in other words a matter of life or death Carlo Petrini founder of Slow Food writes Reinstating food as a central primary element in our lives seems an obvious thing to do since without food no living things would exist Thousands of communities around the world are working to do just this br br A world renowned environmental leader and thinker b Vandana Shiva b is the author of many books including i Earth Democracy i i Water Wars i and i Staying Alive i i Manifestos i includes essays by Prince Charles and Carlo Petrini
